About
The Joby S4 is the all-electric, piloted eVTOL air taxi developed by Joby Aviation of Santa Cruz, California. The aircraft has six tilting propellers, four lithium-ion battery packs, and is designed to carry one pilot and four passengers. Joby's published cruise speed is up to 200 mph (≈320 km/h) and the company's published range figure is 150 miles (≈241 km) on a single charge. The S4 is the only aircraft authorised under Joby's exclusive Dubai operating agreement with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
In UAE service, the S4 is being operated under a parallel-track regulatory pathway: a General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) qualification programme for the aircraft, alongside Joby's GCAA Air Operator Certificate application (Letter of Intent submitted 9 September 2024). The GCAA Director-General has stated publicly that air-taxi certification is targeted for completion by Q3 2026. In parallel, Joby is in the final stages of FAA Type Certification under Part 21.17(b) for the powered-lift category; the first FAA-conforming aircraft began power-on testing in Marina, California on 5 November 2025.

Practical info
Regulatory status
The Joby S4 is being qualified for UAE service under two parallel tracks. Joby submitted a Letter of Intent for an Air Operator Certificate to the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) on 9 September 2024, beginning a five-stage AOC process. In parallel, the GCAA is running an aircraft qualification programme distinct from FAA Type Certification, working with Joby alongside the RTA, the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA) and Dubai Air Navigation Services (DANS). The GCAA Director-General has publicly stated that air-taxi certification is targeted for completion by Q3 2026.
In the United States, the S4 is in Stage 4 of the FAA's five-stage Type Certification process for the powered-lift category under Part 21.17(b). The first FAA-conforming aircraft, registration N547JX, began power-on testing in Marina, California on 5 November 2025; Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) flight testing with FAA pilots is targeted for 2026.
Current progress
Joby's UAE flight test campaign through the end of 2025 comprised 21 piloted S4 flights at Margham over the summer (full transitions, vertical-to-wingborne-to-vertical), the 9 November 2025 piloted Margham → DWC point-to-point flight (17 minutes), and daily S4 demonstration flights during Dubai Airshow 2025 (17–21 November). Joby has stated that passenger-carrying flights in the UAE under the GCAA qualification programme are possible in advance of full FAA Type Certification, but no UAE passenger service date has been published. The targeted commercial launch remains 2026; Joby has not published a specific month.
