Joby S4 Hybrid-Electric Demonstrator

Joby Aviation's S4-T is a hybrid-electric, autonomous derivative of the S4 air taxi, developed with L3Harris Technologies for US defence applications. First flight took place 7 November 2025 at Marina, California. As of May 2026, neither Joby nor any UAE authority has announced deployment of the S4-T variant in the United Arab Emirates.

About

The Joby S4 Hybrid-Electric Demonstrator, designated S4-T, is a turbine-electric, optionally piloted (autonomous) variant of the Joby S4 air taxi. Joby announced the concept in August 2025 alongside a partnership with L3Harris Technologies, and the aircraft completed its first flight on 7 November 2025 at Joby's Marina, California facility.

The S4-T integrates a gas-turbine generator with Joby's electric VTOL platform, where the turbine charges onboard batteries rather than driving rotors directly. The variant retains the S4 airframe with six tilting propellers and Joby's SuperPilot autonomy stack. It is being developed primarily for US Department of War applications including reconnaissance, contested logistics, and "loyal wingman" missions, with potential later commercial application for longer-range air taxi services.

As of May 2026, no operator or regulator has announced deployment, trial, or planned operation of the S4-T variant in the United Arab Emirates. UAE Joby operations announced to date involve the all-electric piloted S4. This entity is included for completeness because the hybrid platform may become relevant to longer Gulf routes if commercialised, but currently there is no UAE-specific programme.

Regulatory status

The S4-T is an experimental, uncrewed demonstrator. It is not the subject of FAA Type Certification — that programme covers Joby's piloted, all-electric S4. The S4-T is being developed for US Department of War applications and is not currently the subject of any published GCAA (UAE) airworthiness or operational approval. UAE Joby operations announced to date are scoped to the piloted S4.

Current progress

As of May 2026, the S4-T has progressed from first hover (7 November 2025) to wingborne transition flight (publicly demonstrated 16 April 2026). Joby and L3Harris have stated they remain on track to begin government mission demonstrations in 2026. No UAE-specific milestone has been published.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Joby S4 Hybrid-Electric flying in the UAE?
No. As of May 2026, the Joby S4 Hybrid-Electric (S4-T) demonstrator has not been deployed, trialled, or announced for operations in the United Arab Emirates. Joby's announced UAE programme covers the piloted, all-electric S4 only.
When did the Joby S4 Hybrid-Electric first fly?
The Joby S4 Hybrid-Electric demonstrator (S4-T) made its first flight on 7 November 2025 at Joby Aviation's Marina, California facility. Joby publicly announced the flight on 13 November 2025.
What is the Joby S4 Hybrid-Electric used for?
The Joby S4 Hybrid-Electric is being developed primarily for US defence applications, including reconnaissance, contested logistics, and "loyal wingman" missions, in partnership with L3Harris Technologies. Joby has indicated potential future commercial use for longer-range air taxi services.
How does the Joby S4 Hybrid-Electric powertrain work?
The Joby S4 Hybrid-Electric uses a gas-turbine generator to charge onboard batteries, which power six electric motors driving tilting propellers. The turbine does not drive the rotors directly. This architecture extends range and endurance compared with the all-electric S4.
Is the Joby S4 Hybrid-Electric piloted?
The Joby S4 Hybrid-Electric demonstrator is uncrewed and uses Joby's SuperPilot autonomous flight control stack. Joby has described the configuration as optionally piloted.
Will the Joby S4 Hybrid-Electric replace the S4 in Dubai?
No announcement has been made. Joby's exclusive six-year operational agreement with the Roads and Transport Authority of Dubai, signed February 2024, covers the piloted, all-electric S4. No published plan extends the Dubai network to the S4 Hybrid-Electric variant.
